Deep Stealth’s Calpernia Addams and Andrea James will be speaking at Northwestern University Thursday, May 18th as part of their Rainbow Week celebrations.
Free and Open to NU Students, Staff, and Faculty
From their website:
The term “deep stealth” means to inhabit a transgendered state so fully and convincingly that no one would ever notice or suspect a difference; it refers to a perfect camouflage, to perfect invisibility. Sadly however, this term could just as well refer to the invisibility and marginalization of transgenderism in today’s media.
In order to explore this complex issue, Northwestern is pleased to present two of the most important voices in the field today, Transamerica stars Calpernia Addams and Andrea James . Calpernia has acted in numerous movies and TV shows (CSI, Gray’s Anatomy, Monster-in-Law) while Andrea has honed her media expertise working advertising for some of the most high-profile businesses in America . Together, the two have formed Deep Stealth Productions, which works to counter the dismal state of transgender depiction today.
Their talk will explore the history of transgender portrayals in 20 th and 21 st century popular media, analyzing it in relation to other marginalized groups in the media. Like Andrea and Calpernia, anyone can get involved in creating a more free , open, and accurate media--come learn more!
There will also be a screening of Transamerica on Sunday, May 21st.
