Calpernia scheduled to appear at Santa Fe 'Beautiful Daughters' premiere Dec. 10

Friday, December 09, 2005

The documentary about Deep Stealth Productions’ first-ever all-transgender performance of the Vagina Monologues has its world premiere at the Santa Fe Film Festival this weekend. Join Calpernia and other featured subjects in the film for this special event.

BEAUTIFUL DAUGHTERS is the first of Eve Ensler’s VAGINA MONOLOGUES performances to focus on transgender sex and transgender women. We meet 60 transgender women from all over the U.S. as they audition and rehearse for their MONOLOGUES performance, participate in one-on-one interviews and group discussions, and speak with utter frankness of their personal heartaches and triumphs.

A few discuss the supportive relationships that help sustain them. Others describe rejection, shaming and violence endured in childhood and beyond—lessons taught by families, schoolmates, teachers, friends and strangers that ?¢‚Ǩ?ìyou can’t be a gender defector.?¢‚Ǩ¬ù Several of the women discuss when and how to reveal your transgender identity to a loved one when you know that he or she might react with abandonment, anger, fear or hate.

Some of the women are already thoroughly out, and others, through the MONOLOGUES, are telling their stories for the first time. The film’s recurring topics include sex, love, loneliness, and the desire to create a global sisterhood and a more loving, less violent society.—Jeanette Alt

Deep Stealth to appear in Middle Sexes HBO Documentary in December

Sunday, November 20, 2005

The documentary on intersex and gender variance directed by Antony Thomas has aired in the UK on Channel 4 and in Canada on CBC. Now it’s getting an American premiere on HBO as scheduled below (check local listings). To watch the trailer and see a clip of Calpernia and Andrea on the show, go to the Deep Stealth “Middle Sexes” page.

New York Magazine review:

On HBO’s America Undercover series, Gore Vidal escorts us through the ambiguities of “gender-blurring” in Middle Sexes: Redefining He and She. Besides chatting up biologists, anthropologists, and psychologists about the complicated family lives of intersexuals, transsexuals, and transvestites, as well as the homophobic rage of middle-American males, he also tracks down and visits with the “third sex” hijras of India, the “lady-boy” kathoey of Thailand, and same-sex senior-citizen couples in Suriname, none of whom seems to be the least bit violent.

Deep Stealth was recently called upon to provide voice training and consultation for Felicity Huffman, star of television’s "Desperate Housewives", for her role as transwoman Bree Daniels in the feature film Transamerica. Calpernia also plays a Texas fiddle player encountered by Felicity’s character, but the very first image in the film (and the first person listed in the closing credits) is our own Andrea James, in an excerpt from "Finding Your Female Voice". Bree is a serious, hard-working woman on track for vaginoplasty and absolutely committed to being accepted by society as the woman she is. And she chooses "Finding Your Female Voice", going through the exercises as she readies herself for work at the beginning of the film.

Transamerica is a film by writer/director Duncan Tucker about a transwoman (Felicity Huffman) who discovers a son she never knew the week before her sexual reassignment surgery. After bailing him out of jail in New York, she returns home to LA with him on a cross-country journey in which she struggles with issues of coming out, parenthood and self acceptance.

Duncan contacted Calpernia and Andrea and engaged them as consultants for his script, verifying the accuracy of his portrayal of a transwoman’s experience. Lead actress Felicity Huffman visited Deep Stealth on numerous occasions to talk with Calpernia and Andrea, and to work on getting her voice right for the role as she saw it.

A festival darling at Tribeca and others, it was acquired by the Weinsteins and will be distributed later this year.
